Leighton Welspun Contractors said it has begun work on the first section of the Rs 3,720 crore nine-km Chenani Nashri Tunnel on NH -1A in Jammu and Kashmir.

The work involves construction of a 9-km two lane main tunnel (13.3m diametre) along with a parallel escape tunnel (5 metre diametre) using the NATM technique of sequential excavation and support.

The technically complex project being built at an elevation of 1200 metres will use advanced drilling and tunnel forming equipment. The tunnel will cut through the mountain to develop an all-weather road connecting Chenani to Nashri reducing the present distance of 30 km to 10 km, besides cutting down travel time by an hour. Leighton Welspun expects to complete the project in five years.

Mr Russell Waugh, Managing Director, Leighton Welspun Contractors, said “We are very pleased to see this nationally important project underway. It is not only a landmark project in the history of India's transportation network but will bring increased safety and employment to the local community.”

The project is being constructed for Chenani Nashri Tunnel Ltd, an IL&FS Transportation Network company.

Operating in India since 1998, Leighton tied up with the Welspun Group to form Leighton Welspun Contractors. The company operates across sectors such as oil & gas, infrastructure and mining, besides buildings.
