Agricultural economists attending the 71st annual conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE) at Dharwad expressed concern over the decrease in the production and productivity of cereals.

Dr Y.K. Alagh, President, Indian Agriculture and Rural Development, Anand, Gujarat, said production and productivity of cereals should be given importance. “Providing food security in terms of production and productivity for increasing population is our responsibility and it should be addressed in the forthcoming 12th Plan”, he said.

“In the last 10 years, the production of pulses, fruits, vegetables and spices has increased in Karnataka, this is a welcome sign. Also, it is appreciable that the poor and marginal families are consuming good quality food now days,” he added.

Mr Alagh said that migration of farmers from rural to urban towns and cities is worrisome; this is impacting agricultural development and also has reduced productivity.

Dr C. Ramaswamy, President, ISAE, said that pre-fixation of price for agricultural produce and non-sharing of government and private organizations for biotechnologically developed crops are agonisable.

Dr Ashok Dalawai, Deputy Director, UIDAI, Regional Office, Bangalore, urged scientists to prepare models for developing agriculture as entrepreneurial activity.
