For the fourth consecutive week, Homedale Estate tea, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped CTC market in Coonoor Tea Trade Association auctions. At Sale No: 8, it topped in both leaf and dust sales.

“Our broken pekoe (BP) was bought by Komal Enterprises for Rs 149 – the highest among all teas from bought-leaf factories. Our pekoe dust (PD) topped dust market when Girnar Food Beverages bought it for Rs 146. In all, our nine grades got Rs 132 and more,” the Homedale Managing Partner, Mr Prashant Menon, told Business Line .

Darmona Estate and Hittakkal Estate got Rs 141 each, Vigneshwar Estate Rs 140, Shanthi Supreme Rs 137, Sree Tea Supreme Rs 136 and Blue Monte Estate special Rs 135. In all, 78 marks fetched Rs 100 and more.

Corporate sector

Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Chamraj got Rs 179, Curzon and Singara Estate Rs 168 each, Highfield Estate Rs 162, Havukal Rs 161, Prammas and Tiger Hill clonal Rs 160 each. In all, 34 marks got Rs 100 and more.

Nearly a quarter of the 9.50 lakh kg on offer was withdrawn for want of buyers even after shedding Rs 3 a kg. Teas worth Rs 1.75 crore remained unsold with no takers for 25 per cent of the offer.

CTC

“High-priced CTC leaf lost Rs 5-10 a kg and better mediums Rs 2-4 while plainers suffered withdrawal even after shedding Rs 3. Most orthodox leaf grades lost Rs 2-3 but whole leaf managed to gain up to Rs 3. Primary orthodox dusts eased Rs 4-5. Some high-priced CTC dusts managed to gain Rs 2-4 but mediums and plainers suffered withdrawal even after shedding Rs 3”, an auctioneer said.

Export purchases this week were the weakest so far in 2011. Pakistan bought selectively in a wide range of Rs 57-93 a kg and the CIS, Rs 45-75.

Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging Rs 48-54 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 85-140 for brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 55-60 for plain dusts and Rs 90-140 for brighter liquoring dusts.
