Turmeric prices in Erode markets increased on Tuesday on demand for the hybrid variety.
“Traders have received some upcountry demand for turmeric, especially for the hybrid variety. So, they are buying all the hybrid turmeric placed for sale. On Tuesday, about 1,800 bags of hybrid turmeric arrived for sale. They also procured all the 1,800 and odd bags of hybrid turmeric,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
Of the 5,000 bags that arrived on Tuesday, 70 per cent was sold. He said traders have got orders from North India and are buying turmeric in bulk. Of the total arrival of hybrid finger turmeric, 50 per cent was classified as best quality and traders quoted ₹800 a quintal higher than previous day. The hybrid root variety increased by ₹100 a quintal.
The minimum price of the commodity has increased from ₹3,189 to ₹3,799 a quintal. Prices in the futures market were unchanged. The sale of turmeric in the Nizamabad and Warangal markets was poor, said traders.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹3,799-6,599 a quintal, the root variety ₹3,796-5,930.
Salem HybridThe finger variety fetched ₹5,687 to ₹7,699, the root variety ₹5,299 to ₹6,111 a quintal. Of the 1,203 bags that arrived, 410 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,485 to ₹6,685, the root variety ₹5,591 to ₹6,094 a quintal. Of the 610 bags on offer, 597 found takers.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,699 to ₹6,696, root variety at ₹5,191 to ₹6,089. Of the arrival of 929 bags of turmeric, 881.
At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹5,701 to ₹6,649, the root variety ₹4,950 to ₹6,069. All the 254 bags of turmeric placed for sale were traded.
