The West Bengal government on Tuesday decided to set up a taskforce to keep tabs on the markets and to monitor prices of vegetables.
“State government officials will monitor the wholesale and retail markets daily and inform the taskforce about hike in prices and hoarding of vegetables,” the Home Secretary, Mr G.D. Gautama, told reporters here.
The nine-member taskforce will be headed by the chief executive officer (CEO) of the West Bengal Agri-Marketing Board, Mr Rajesh Singh.
The decision to set up the taskforce comes close on the heels of the Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee's surprise visits to city markets to seek reasons behind sudden rise in vegetable prices across the city and the State.
Ms Banerjee later issued a warning that, if necessary, action would be taken against hoarders.
