A new variety of Samba Mahsuri rice, which is resistant to bacterial blight, high yielding and possessing fine-grains has been developed and deployed by Indian researchers.
This innovation has been rewarded with the CSIR Award for S&T Innovations for Rural Development (CAIRD), 2013. The winners are the joint developers—CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and Directorate of Rice Research, both based in Hyderabad.
On the occasion of the Foundation Day of CSIR today, its Director General, PS Ahuja announced the award in New Delhi. The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs, citation and a shield was instituted in 2006.
The award recognises the contributions to help bring about a transformation in the lives of the rural poor. It also should give a boost to the rural development.
