The Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), the premier rice research centre of the country here, is now ready with two new high-yielding varieties of rice that are awaiting the nod from the central committee.
With these two varieties in pipeline, the institute now boasts of developing at least 82 new rice varieties during its 64 years of existence.
During the last two years, the institute had come out with 11 new varieties, of which five were exclusively suitable for varied ecosystems of Orissa, its Director Mr T.K. Adhya said while addressing the newsmen here.
He said the new rice varieties were released by the Central and State committees for general cultivation in different parts of the country.
While varieties like CR Dhan-701, CR Dhan-601, CR Boro Dhan-2, CR Dhan-401 and CR Dhan-501 were released by the Central committee for cultivation in Bihar, Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the Orissa State sub-committee has released CR Dhan-801, CR Dhan-401, CR Dhan-402, CR Dhan-403 and CR Dhan-901 for cultivation in the State.
Similarly, CR 2301-5 and CR 2285-6-6-3-1, which are of high yielding varieties, with desirable cooking qualities are ready to be okayed by the Central committee as these varieties were cleared for release during an all-India meeting held in Hyderabad last week, the Director said.
According to the scientists of the institute, among the five varieties, two are extremely favourable for the coastal saline areas of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts in the state.
“These varieties can give a yield of 3.5 to 4.0 tonnes per hectare having duration of 150 to 155 days,” they said.
Besides, the institute has also released an aromatic variety CR Dhan-901 which has been developed from Chinikamini, a popular land race of Southern Orissa, having a yield potential of 3.5 tonnes per hectare.
Mr Adhya pointed out that apart from developing high-yielding varieties, the institute is also engaged in developing agro-technologies for the benefit of rice farmers.
“Since we are entrusted with responsibilities like scientific monitoring and providing technological know-how for the Second Green Revolution, we are giving stress on developing climate resilient rice varieties,” he said.
