Global black tea production in the first half of current calendar has fallen by seven per cent over the corresponding period of 2011, reveals an analysis of the latest data available with producers’ and traders’ bodies.
“According to our compilation, global black tea production till June has fallen to 766.72 million kg (mkg) from 824.54 mkg last year”, Rajesh Gupta, Director, Global Tea Brokers, publishers of annual Global Tea Statistical Diary, told Business Line.
This fall of 57.82 mkg marks a decline of seven per cent. The largest reduction of 20.29 mkg has occurred in Kenya (production: 158.17 mkg).
Closely following this is 20.24 mkg in India (338.08 mkg). Here, North India has lost 13.44 mkg (222.76) while the South, 6.80 mkg (115.32 mkg).
Uganda has lost 8.86 mkg (12.65 mkg) while Sri Lanka 7.40 mkg (163.26 mkg). Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania have also posted a lower production.
Bangladesh and Indonesia are the only countries reporting an increase, marginal though, on production.
