The Karnataka Planters' Association (KPA) at its Budget General Meeting - 2011 held at Chikmagalur launched its Web site >kpa.org.in to connect its members and to offer latest developments in the plantation sector.

According to Mr Sahadev Balakrishna, Chairman, KPA, “The Web site helps the members in getting all market information, about all the major plantation crops like coffee, tea, rubber, pepper, cardamom and areca.”

“The unique feature of the Web site is the direct link to the ICE futures in New York to track the Arabica futures prices. Weather, schemes of the Coffee Board, latest news and reports of the KPA are all displayed,” he added.

KPA on the occasion honoured its founder chairman, Mr U.K.Lakshman Gowda, for his contribution to the planting industry. The past chairman, Mr I.J.J.Rebello, highlighted the pioneering achievements of Mr Gowda from inception of the association in 1958 by uniting the various factions, his role as a member of the Coffee Board for more than 30 years, his fight for the cause of the plantation industry as a Member of Parliament for two-terms and the extremely vast knowledge of the entire coffee industry that he had.

Coffee & Pepper - the Vietnam way

Earlier at the meeting, detail presentation of the KPA's Vietnam Tour was made. Mr Nishant Gurjer convener, scientific committee, KPA, gave an elaborate presentation on the “Cultivation Aspects of Coffee & Pepper - the Vietnam way” and said: “In Vietnam, the coffee seedling is selected from the best plant material by unique nursery preparation methods followed by planting in large pits filled with manure and fertilisers. Each and every plant has got a basin system for irrigation and for fertiliser application.”

“Continuous irrigation even after the blossom and several applications of fertiliser is the standout feature of the cultivation method of Vietnam in both coffee and pepper,” he added. Coffee and pepper are grown in open conditions with little or no shade at all. “We were pleasantly surprised to find wet processing plants in the large state farms, these have been introduced recently and will surely go a long way in improving the quality of Vietnam coffee in the future,” said Mr Gurjer.
