The Sardar Saroval Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) has commenced works on expansion of the Narmada branch canal network to the tune of Rs 1,933 crore this month, the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, said today.
Addressing a foundation-laying ceremony for the Limbdi branch canal, having an estimated cost of Rs 638 crore, in Surendranagar district, he said it would extend irrigational benefits to 2,71 lakh acres of land in 189 villages of 11 talukas in three districts.
The total length of all the proposed branch canals under the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) is 2,585 km, out of which construction for 1,933 km has already been completed. All the works for remaining network of branch canals are expected to be completed in next two years.
Mr Modi said the State Government had earmarked Rs. 9,000 crore in the current financial year itself for the SSP. He also urged the farmers not to withdraw water from canals illegally, as it will prevent water from reaching remote areas.
