An east-west shear zone of monsoon turbulence has returned to position over peninsular and adjoining central India, presaging active monsoon conditions in the region. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update on Monday evening said that the monsoon trough would soon shift from its anomalous northerly alignment to revert to its normal position by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the seasonal rain deficit stayed at one per cent, with only east and northeast India the only region to be burdened with any deficit at all. At minus eight per cent, this is well within the tolerance limit of what the IMD has defined as the ‘normal.' Fresh spell of rains expected over central and north peninsular India should ensure that the deficit does not grow significantly during the rest of the month.

Especially so, since this is likely seen as being followed up by another round of rains for northwest, east and northeast India. A weather warning issued by the IMD said that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A short-term outlook valid until Thursday said that fairly widespread rain or thundershowers would break out along the west coast and Lakshadweep as also the North-eastern States, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Scattered rain or thundershowers may occur over the remaining parts of east India on Tuesday and become fairly widespread thereafter. Isolated rain or thundershowers are forecast for northwest and central India on Tuesday before becoming fairly widespread thereafter. The rains would be scattered over interior Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh .
