The cyclonic circulation over south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea may be sustaining thundershowers in the peninsula, but it also hastening monsoon withdrawal in the region.

The south-westerly flows seem to have tapered off over the landmass, as a seasonal anti-cyclonic circulation heralding autumnal/winter weather establishes over Central and North-West India.

Flows directed towards the peninsula are being appropriated by the cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea, leaving the landmass free for north-easterly winds from North-West and Central India.

End of season

This is as it should be as the four-month monsoon draws to close with an estimated 12 per cent deficit.

An India Met Department update said that the line of withdrawal linked Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Vadodara and Porbandar (Gujarat), depicting its reach in central India.

The withdrawal process will gain further speed during the next week as the rest of central and peninsular India gets covered, including the South that is witnessing evening thundershowers. This is because of the interaction between the flows associated with the withdrawing monsoon and the outer bands of the flows that wraps around the circulation in the east-central Arabian Sea.

The opposing winds have set up a narrow corridor of unstable weather as hot days cause air to expand and rise to be replaced by moisture-laden flows by the evening.

Unstable weather

This has given rise to violent weather and localised moderate to heavy rain marked by thunder and lightning at many parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka and Kerala over the past few days.

US-based models suggest that the unstable weather would extend to the extreme South covering Kerala and south Tamil Nadu due to a weather system developing off Sri Lanka in due course.

Kalpana satellite imagery on Tuesday showed thunder clouds rising over parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, south-east Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Comorin area.

Many parts of the peninsula, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, received moderate to heavy showers during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.
