To boost the export of quality spices and spice products, the Spices Board has set up its sixth Quality Evaluation Laboratory-cum-Training Centre (QEL) at Tuticorin.
The facility, set up at an investment of Rs 8 crore, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, on Sunday.
The laboratory can test samples for 10 parameters such as total plate count, yeast and mould count, samonella, coliforms, aflatoxin, sudan eye, moisture, colour value, volatile oil and capsaicin.
Besides, QEL would help to identify the pesticides, illegal dilution and other life-threatening funguses seen in spices with advanced equipment.
According to Spices Board officials, setting up of the laboratory would be a boon to exporters in the Tamil Nadu region. Hitherto, exporters in these regions were fully depended on the board’s lab in Kochi for testing export samples.
In addition to labs, there are also plans to conduct training and to carry out R&D project work in quality control aspects of spice and spice products to improve its competence, a press statement issued here said.
