India’s tea production increased 2.23 per cent in August, mainly on account of higher output in West Bengal, according to government data.

Output rose to 154.26 million kg in August from 150.90 million kg a year earlier, the Tea Board said.

Tea production in West Bengal increased 11.53 per cent to 43.03 million kg in August from 38.58 million kg a year earlier. In Assam, output was up 0.9 per cent to 93.27 million kg from 92.44 million kg.

Assam and West Bengal are the two biggest tea-producing states, with their combined output accounting for 90 per cent of production in August. In south India, tea output declined 15.8 per cent to 17.28 million kg.

Tea exports this fiscal year are expected to be maintained at last year’s level of 190 million kg amid a decline in shipments to Pakistan, the third-largest market for Indian tea.

“Exports to Pakistan have come down this year, but there is enough demand for Indian tea and shipments are expected to be in the same range of 190 million, as it was in last fiscal,” Federation of Tea Traders Association of India Vice-President Ramesh Chand Agarwal said.

India is the world’s second-largest producer and the biggest consumer of tea. The country’s tea output increased 3.6 per cent to 1,135 million kg in 2012-13.
