An International Training Programme on Integrated Management of Eriophyid Mite on Coconut is under way at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
Organised jointly by TNAU and the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, Bangladesh, the programme, which commenced yesterday is on up to August 3.
Four scientists representing Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute are attending this training.
Acting Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of TNAU, Dr P. Subbian, said the estimated yield loss in copra due to the Eriophyid mite pest infestation ranged between 10 and 35 per cent during the early part of this century. Its impact and loss in coir quality was estimated at 10-15 per cent.
TNAU’s Integrated Mite Management package, which included application of nutrients and botanicals helped bring considerable progress in containing the spread, though complete control of the pest has still not been achieved, he said.
The Director at the Centre for Plant Protection Studies, Dr E.I. Jonathan, said there was a need to do more in the area of acarology.
Both TNAU and BARC have proposed to do joint research on mite management.
