As expected, the mass of clouding with ‘promising' features to the southeast of the peninsula has come under the influence of opposing westerlies to north-westerlies from northwest India.

The clouding is associated with a cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal that has since been forced to move to the south of Sri Lanka.

LANKA RAINS

The island nation is expected to get most of the rainfall from the system with the possibility of thundershowers being propagated to southeast Tamil Nadu and adjoining peninsular south including south Kerala during the weekend.

The westerlies to south-westerlies have been triggered by an incumbent western disturbance sitting over the hills and plains of northwest India.

This system is expected to influence weather in the region during the rest of the week, which will be punctuated by thunder squalls and hailstorm over the plains.

WEATHER WARNING

A weather warning issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that isolated heavy rain or snow would occur over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Wednesday and Thursday.

Isolated hailstorm or thunder squalls have been forecast over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh during this period.

Extended outlook until Sunday said that fairly widespread precipitation would continue over western Himalayan region and isolated rain or thundershowers over the plains of northwest India.

Scattered rain or thundershowers has been forecast over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
