It is windy, but varyingly sunny and cloudy this morning in Thiruvananthapuram, gateway for southwest monsoon into mainland India.
The winds continue to be west-northwesterly, which doesn’t help the monsoon cause, and are mainly responsible for the sunny weather.
The winds need to be westerly to southwesterly in order to push the clouds and moisture across the equator into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
Winds are mostly adhering to this pattern in the Bay of Bengal, but have been thwarted in the Arabian Sea by a cyclonic circulation in far-off southwest basin.
The wind pattern in the coastal Arabian Sea would continue to be west-northwesterly for at least the next three to four days, as per outlook available this morning.
Onset of monsoon may take place only by early next week, accompanied by a strong southwesterly surge, according to global forecasts.
This would put it beyond the farthest date in the forecast window originally out by India Meteorological Department.
