Abad Fisheries is set to open an institute, School of Fish, aimed at promoting best practices in the seafood industry.

The institute will start functioning in Kochi from next month in collaboration with the UK-based Billingsgate Seafood Training School of Fishmongers’ Company, for seafood lovers and professionals.

Offering short and medium-term courses, the institute will be the first of its kind promoted by a marine company for the overall development of the sector for stakeholders as well as members across the seafood value chain.

According to Feroz Javed, Director, Abad Fisheries, the institute is designed with the objective of improving the quality of seafood from sea to fork, skill development of professionals, employability of students, and to attract talent to the seafood industry.

“This is a non-profit outfit and the school will introduce modern equipment and teach the latest technologies adopted by developed countries for fishing in order to enhance the skills of our fishermen,” he said.

Courses will be also offered to home and hobby chefs, students, professionals, and fishermen. Initially there will be short-term courses, which will include a selection of seafood, cutting, cleaning, and preparation and preservation techniques.

The school will be established as a not-for-profit organisation. However, it will ensure the sustainability of the model through funding from different sources. A share of the CSR budget of the promoter company would be earmarked for the operation of the school.

However, a nominal fee will be collected from participants to defray the direct expenses of the courses as well as to ensure the commitment of the trainees, he said.
