Avataa multi-brew teas enter Indian auctions

The Avataa Nilgiri multi-brew teas, popular in the US and Europe, will enter Indian auctions through the ‘Nilgiri Winter Speciality Tea Auction' to be conducted on March 10 by the Nilgiri Planters' Association with the Tea Board as principal sponsor.

“This is the first time our high-value-low-volume teas are being offered in any Indian auction. We are offering 15 kg each of White Tea, Twirl Green Tea and Nilgiri Long ding tea in six separate lots and 5 kg of Virgin Green Tea in a single lot,” Mr G Udayakumar, Director, Bluegate Beverages, which manufactures these teas, told Business Line.

“Of them, ‘Avataa Nilgiri Long Ding Green Tea' has won prestigious certification ‘tea with superior characteristics' at ‘North American Hot Tea Spring Championship 2011' and was showcased in ‘champion circle' at Las Vegas World Tea Expo,” he said.

“Recently, we have received orders for sizable volume for supply to Japan. It is not common for exporters to place orders for larger quantity of high value teas but volumes of these teas are traded because of importers' preference due to fragrant brew. The white pubescent hairy brush accompanying the tender leaf contributes to the taste and increased polyphenols presence,” Mr Udayakumar said.
