The Tobacco Board has bagged the Golden Leaf Award for “its most impressive public service initiatives” in the sector. Tobacco Board Chairman K Gopal said it was the first Government organisation or agency to bag the prestigious award and “the credit goes entirely to the enterprising tobacco farmers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.” He received the award recently in Washington at an international conference held by the Global Tobacco Network Forum (GTNF) to discuss the emerging issues in the tobacco sector. The initiatives taken by the board in extension activities, reduction of pesticide residues, introduction of good agricultural practices and e-auctions in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka came in for high praise at the conference, he said.
