Spot turmeric prices increased at Erode markets following a rise in the futures trade, besides arrival of quality produce and strong upcountry demand. “Traders purchased all the good and medium quality turmeric for their demand. Some traders bought finger turmeric along with the hybrid turmeric for their upcountry orders,” said Krishnamurthy, a trader. Of the arrival of 6,500 bags, 4,500 bags were new turmeric and almost all the new and hybrid turmeric were sold. Hybrid varieties ruled unchanged, while local finger turmeric was up ₹500 a quintal. But the price of local root variety decreased by ₹100-150. At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger turmeric went for ₹7,579-8,159; root variety ₹6,789-7,209 a quintal. Of the 1,130 bags offered, 728 were sold.
