Even after shedding prices to a four-week low average of ₹79.25 a kg at Sale No: 8 of Coonoor Tea Trade Association auction, nearly 22 per cent of the 12.35 lakh kg on offer remained unsold for want of buyers. Six grades of CTC teas from bought-leaf factories shot into high-price bracket fetching over ₹200 a kg.
‘Broken Orange Pekoe Small’ grade of Darmona Tea and Industry, auctioned by J Thomas and Company, topped the entire CTC market and Leaf auction fetching ₹240 a kg. Pekoe Dust grade of Homedale Estate, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the Dust auction fetching ₹204 and its Red Dust grade came second at ₹203.
Super Red Dust grade of Darmona (₹202) was the only other grade to enter this bracket in the Dust market.
Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Chamraj topped at ₹255 followed by Kairbetta at ₹245, Kodanad ₹237, Havukal ₹221 and Mailoor Estate premium at ₹217.
Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging ₹52-54 a kg for plain leaf grades and ₹100-165 for brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged ₹60-64 for plain dusts and ₹110-180 for brighter liquoring dusts.
There was some purchase by Pakistan in the range of ₹60-116 a kg.
