Food Corporation of India (FCI) is estimated to have incurred a financial loss of Rs 484.76 crore in 2010-11 due to damage to foodgrains and storage and transit loss, the Food and Public Distribution Minister, Mr K.V. Thomas, has said.
FCI, a nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, is estimated to have lost Rs 484.76 crore in 2010-11 against Rs 437.87 crore in the previous year, the Minister said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today.
According to figures revealed today, FCI lost about Rs 482 crore from storage and transit loss alone this year, while damage to foodgrains was only Rs 2.92 crore. Up to January 2011, the quantum of foodgrains damaged in FCI godowns stood at 6,348 tonnes.
The Minister said that FCI has initiated 116 cases against irregularities and corruption so far this year.
In a separate reply, Mr Thomas said the Delhi Government reported in December 2010 seizure of 1,238 bags of wheat and 461 bags of rice (50 kg each) meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS) that were being diverted.
The Delhi Government has taken action by cancelling the authorisation of the ration shop and terminated the transporting agency.
The Minister also said the Government has received three complaints — two in 2007-08 and one in 2010-11 — about the supply of poor quality of foodgrains through PDS.
