North-west and east India continued to witness fog to dense fog conditions as residual moisture hung in over the region in almost wind-free conditions during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.

Easterly to northeasterly winds are prevailing in the lower levels over most parts of the country outside parts of northwest India, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said.

DENSE FOG

Fog cover enveloped many parts of west Uttar Pradesh and northwest Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, east Uttar Pradesh and northeast Rajasthan and isolated pockets of Bihar.

The IMD update said that the visibility reduced below 50 m or less in very dense fog conditions over Amritsar, Karnal, Meerut, Aligarh, Agra, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Hamirpur, Gwalior, Guna, Datia and Khajuraho.

Fog conditions are expected to start lifting over the Indo-Gangetic plains from Friday only, an IMD outlook said. This would mean a further fall of two to three deg Celsius in minimum temperatures.

WEATHER WARNING

A weather warning valid for Wednesday said that visibility may reduce below 200 metres over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and northwest Madhya Pradesh and isolated pockets of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

A short-term outlook valid until Friday said that fog to dense fog conditions would sustain over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and northwest Madhya Pradesh and isolated pockets of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during morning/early morning hours.

EASTRELY WAVE

Meanwhile, an Insat picture showed convective (rain-bearing) clouds rising over parts of south Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea and south Arabian Sea as the peninsula awaited a fresh easterly wave.

Rain or thundershowers have been forecast at many places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and at one or two places over Lakshadweep over the next two days. Rain or thundershowers have also been forecast at one or two places over Tamil Nadu during this period before spreading to many places thereafter.
