Global black tea production this calendar year is trailing behind last year due to adverse weather slowing the harvest in many producing zones.
Global black tea production so far this year has fallen to 144.41 million kg (mkg) from 154.32 mkg in the same period of 2014.This reduction of 7.93 mkg marks a decline of 5.21 per cent.
Kenya has been leading the downfall accounting for 3.37 mkg out of this shortage of 7.93 mkg. Its production has fallen to 41.60 mkg from 44.97 mkg.
Malawi reported a shortfall of 2.71 mkg at 11.59 mkg.
Uganda lost 2.49 mkg to produce 3.11 mkg.
“Production has fallen in both North and South India as well. In the North, production dropped by 0.61 mkg to dip to 6.14 mkg. In South, production has dropped by 0.23 mkg to total 30.80 mkg. Collectively, India’s production has fallen by 0.84 mkg to total 36.94 mkg”, Rajesh Gupta, compiler of Global Tea Digest, said.
Sri Lanka posted an increase of 0.83 mkg to reach 48.72 mkg.
