Global black tea production so far this calendar has fallen short of 2016 marginally by 0.89 per cent as the increase in output in many countries could not offset the significant loss in Kenya. “Our compilation of the official data received from different countries shows that the global production of black tea so far this calendar has fallen to 1,335.37 million kg (mkg) from 1,347.38 mkg in the same months of 2016,” Rajesh Gupta, compiler of annual ‘Global Tea Digest’ told BusinessLine . India topped the black tea production table at 766.72 mkg, up by 33.45 mkg. Sri Lanka’s output increased by 8.92 mkg to reach 205.77 mkg. However, Kenya produced more tea than Sri Lanka to occupy the second place in the table. Kenya’s output totalled 265.16 mkg. Uganda posted a loss of 8.24 mkg and Bangladesh 3.61 mkg.
