Good demand resulted in rise in prices at Kochi tea auction

A good demand resulted in the surging of prices of some varieties of tea in the Kochi Tea auction.

The market for CTC dust was firm to dearer by Rs 3 to Rs 5 and sometimes more especially the powdery grades following quality. The increase in price was less for grainier varieties of medium and plainer teas.

In sale no 51, the quantity on offer in dust grades was 14,31,500 kg. There was a better enquiry from Kerala Loose Tea Traders and upcountry buyers.

However, the quantity on offer in orthodox grades was low at 8,500 kg. The market was lower and witnessed heavy withdrawals. A small quantity of orthodox dust sold was absorbed by exporters.

In the best CTC dusts, PD varieties quoted Rs 91/111, RD grades ruled Rs 99/130, SRD fetched Rs 108/140 and SFD at Rs 114/149.

There was a fair demand in leaf category and the quantity on offer in orthodox grades was 212,500 kg.

The market for select best Nilgiri whole leaf and brokens was fully firm to sometimes dearer. Others were irregular and lower. Well made clean black medium whole leaf, tippy grades and bolder brokens was steady to firm and sometimes dearer.

The quantity on offer in CTC leaf was 61,000 kg with active support from exporters and upcountry buyers. The market for good liquoring teas was firm to dearer. Others were irregular and lower.

In the dust category, Manjolai SFD quoted the best prices of Rs 151 followed by Monica SFD and Sholayar SFD at Rs 150 each. In the leaf grades, Chamraj FOP- (S) Green Tea fetched the best prices of Rs 315 followed by Pascoes Hyson Green Tea at Rs 281.
