The Tea Board of India has announced the district average price for green leaf in the Nilgiris for March as ₹15 a kg.
The Deputy Director of Tea Development CS Hariprakash instructed all bought-leaf factories to adhere to this price while buying the green leaf from the farmers in the district till March 31.
This is the highest price in 10 months.
“We have repeatedly appealed to the Tea Board not to fix the green leaf price in advance for every month because there is no such price protection for us for our black tea sold through the auctions. Since the green leaf price is dependent on the price we get at the auctions for the black tea manufactured with this green tea, the green leaf price can be fixed only after we get to know the price for our black tea”, Ramesh Bhojarajan, President, The Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association told Business Line .
