India’s tea exports in the current calendar are expected to rise above last year in terms of both volume and value, based on the performance so far. According to the Tea Board, volume shipped in the first half of calendar 2016 rose to 97.44 million kg (mkg) from 92.13 mkg in the first half of 2015. This marked a growth of 5.76 per cent. The average price fetched by these exports increased to ₹191.11 a kg from ₹175.76. More volume could be shipped despite a rise in unit price because of increased demand in many importing countries. Consequently, the overall earnings in the first half rose to ₹1,862.21 crore from ₹1,619.30 crore. This marked an increase of 15 per cent.
