A three-day meet to review ongoing research projects and to discuss new research initiatives on palms will be held at the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) in Kasaragod from October 15.

The 20th Biennial Group Meeting on All India Coordinated Research Project on Palms (AICRP on Palms) will cover coconut, oil palms and palmyrah, according to Mr George V. Thomas, Director, CPCRI.

Research centres

At present, AICRP on Palms has 21 research centres spread over 13 states in the country. These comprise 13 centres doing research on coconut, six centres on oil palm and two centres on palmyrah, all under the respective state agricultural universities. The meet at CPCRI will be inaugurated by Mr H.P. Singh, Deputy Director-General (Horticulture), Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR).

The event will feature technical sessions and the first in the series will be on ‘Priorities in coconut research – expectations from coconut development system and farming community.' Senior officials from the Coconut Development Board and the State Agriculture and Horticulture departments will take part in the deliberations.

The other sessions will include review of research projects on genetic resources and crop improvement in coconut, oil palm and palmyrah, varietal release proposals and review of research projects on crop management in the coconut sector. Review sessions will also be held on pest management in coconut plantations, research projects on disease management in coconut and post-harvest technologies for palmyrah.

Around 100 scientists from different research centres are expected to participate in the group meeting.
