A third low-pressure area has popped up over North-West India as the weather-battered region woke up to a fresh week of sustained snow, rain, thundershowers and hailstorms.

As expected, the ‘low’ has been induced by a parent western disturbance located by the India Met Department (IMD) over the Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan border on Monday. The low-pressure area was hovering over North-West Rajasthan as on date.

The IMD said that this is the first of the two western disturbances approaching North-West India in quick succession during the week. The second one is expected to dig into the region by Wednesday. The latter was spotted not far behind, having parked itself over Iran on Monday. It will trigger a high moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea (off Gujarat), specifically targeting the Western Himalayas on Wednesday and Thursday.

It will also set up strong wind convergence at the higher levels in the hills and wind confluence at the lower levels over the plains of North-West India on both days to generate varying weather, the IMD said.

A special forecast bulletin said that fairly widespread to widespread rain/snow would occur over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on these days. It would become scattered to fairly widespread over Uttarakhand during the next five days of the week. However, the intensity of the rain/snow will be high on Wednesday and Thursday.

IMD advisory

Isolated heavy rain/snow should occur over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh while light/moderate or isolated scattered rainfall would occur over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh from Monday to Thursday.

Thunderstorms accompanied with hailstorms, lightning and gusty winds are forecast at isolated places over the Jammu division, the lower reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand mainly on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

A similar forecast is valid for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and North Rajasthan on Wednesday and Thursday. An extended forecast by the IMD has said that western disturbance activity will continue unabated till the month-end.

Showers in Coastal TN

Meanwhile, the 24 hours ending on Monday morning saw rain/snow/thundershowers being reported from most places over Jammu & Kashmir, many places over Himachal Pradesh, and at a few places over Uttarakhand.

Rain/thundershowers also occurred at many places over East and North-East India from lingering moisture from a previous western disturbance, the IMD said. Parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry benefited in the process.
