The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme announced recently by the Centre was only aimed at creating an illusion of a farmer-friendly government and what is given out is just a pittance, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) said on Monday.

The government has made a further mockery of it by announcing February 20 as the deadline for submission of applications for the first instalment of ₹2,000, AIKS said.

“It has issued an order that the application for the first instalment must be made by February 20. However, the order was received only on February 16 in most States and the intervening period also had a Sunday. There are over 12 crore households holding 2 hectares or less and to reach this section within this period is an absurd proposition,” the AIKS release said.

The Left-backed farmers’ body further said that the scheme will bypass the vast majority of the peasantry in the country as it excludes landless and tenant farmers.
