The edible oil industry sees a four per cent decline in rapeseed-mustard output this year on account of dip in acreage in Rajasthan, the main producing State.

The crop survey carried out by the Solvent Extractors Association of India, the apex body for the edible oil trade in the country, pegged the rapeseed-mustard crop for the current season at 63.3 lakh tonnes (lt), according to provisional estimates, over last year’s 65.75 lt.

However, the SEA’s provisional estimates of 63.3 lt are much lower than the Agriculture Ministry’s latest projections.

In the recently-released second advance estimates, the Ministry had pegged rapeseed-mustard output at 75.40 lt — down from last year’s final estimates of 79.17 lt.

Production in Rajasthan is seen declining to 24.50 lt (29.50 lt), according to SEA. The acreage under mustard has come down by around 17 per cent to 21.26 lakh hectares from last year’s 25.62 lakh ha.

Gujarat is also expected to see a drop in output mainly on account of lower yields.

However, other producing States such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab & Haryana, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, are seen reporting an increase in production largely on account of increase in acreages. In the current rabi season, rapeseed-mustard was sown on 64.12 lakh ha, down from 70.56 lakh ha in the previous year.
