Shree Bharathi College, Mangalore, will conduct a seminar on ‘Areca agriculture, a culture’ on January 19 and 20.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, G.N. Bhat, Principal of the college, said that the objective of the seminar is to create awareness among the young students on cultivation of arecanut and its impact on the regional culture.
He said that arecanut has played a major role in the culture of many people from the area. The seminar will make an effort to create interest among the younger generation on the cultural impact of arecanut cultivation.
Apart from resource persons, students from various colleges in the region will present their papers on the occasion.
Former managing director of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd A.S. Bhat will inaugurate the seminar on January 19. G.V. Joshi, professor at Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management at Nitte, will deliver the keynote address on the occasion, he said.
There will be three technical sessions during the two-day seminar. Shankar Bhat Badanaje, an eminent areca grower and researcher, will chair the first session. Vigneshwar Varmudi, professor of economics at Vivekananda College, Puttur, will chair the second session, and K. Krishnamurthy from Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College in Ujire, will chair the third session.
Bhat said that the seminar is being organised to mark the decennial celebrations of Shree Bharathi group of institutions.
