Silver Tips, the orthodox leaf tea, produced by Tata Coffee Ltd at its Pachamallai Estate in the Anamallai ranges, fetched a record price of ₹4601/kg at the Cochin Tea auctions.

Only seven kg of the tea was on offer, and it was auctioned by Paramount Tea Marketing (SI) Pvt Ltd, Kochi. Silver Tips is a winter specialty tea, available only once in few years, depending on the weather patterns in the high ranges.

Uneven markets

Pachamallai Estate's Black Swirl, also garnered a good price of ₹556/kg in the Cochin sale No. 50. The quantity on offer was 10 kg. Meanwhile, the CTC dust market was lower by ₹2-3, especially for high-priced teas in the Cochin auctions. Good liquoring medium teas sold at around the last level. The quantity on offer was 9,80,255 kg, and the average price realised was ₹125 per kg, compared to ₹126.21 per kg the previous week.

In orthodox grades, the primary market barely remained steady, with 9,500 kg on offer. Exporters remained the main stakeholders for the small quantity sold.

In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹124-168, mediums quoted ₹98-136, and plain grades stood at ₹95-104.

In the leaf category, the market for Nilgiri brokens and whole leaf in orthodox grades was firm-to-dearer, following quality. The quantity on offer was 2,37,357.50 kg. Exporters to CIS and traditional exporters were active.

In CTC leaf, the market for good liquoring brokens and Fannings was firm-to-dearer as well. Others were irregular, lower by ₹1-3. The quantity on offer was 68,000 kg.

Monica SFD quoted the best prices in dust varieties, at ₹171.
