T. Stanes & Co will celebrate its sesquicentennial year on July 9 at Stanes Auditorium, Coimbatore.

Founded in 1861 by Robert Stanes, an Englishman, the company at inception was only into coffee curing works. Later, Stanes forayed into other activities such as tea gardens, textiles, automobile dealerships, organic manures and a school for European children.

Hundred years later, in 1961, leading South Indian industrialist Mr S. Anantharamakrishnan acquired and merged T. Stanes with the Amalgamations Group.

There are more than 45 companies in the Amalgamations Group today including Simpson & Co Ltd, TAFE, India Pistons Ltd, Bimetal Bearings Ltd , Higginbothams etc.

T. Stanes & Co operates three divisions – agricultural, consumer and industrial products and herbal division.

The company’s agricultural division is into manufacture and distribution of agro inputs for plant protection and crop care.

The company has introduced seeds – both hybrid and high-yielding varietal seeds for various crops, introduced eco-friendly biological products to support organic farming and contributed to sustainable conventional farming.

Stanes has a network of 11,000 dealers and over 200 field staff to meet the requirements of farmers and marketing channel partners. Company sources told this correspondent that Stanes pioneered the Integrated Pest Management and Integrated Nutrient Management systems. Other contributions include an anti-transpirant, a prophylactic bactericide, an anti viral product and a natural pesticide based on neem. The company’s animal and health care division is into development of products for poultry and dairy industry. Its tea and coffee division offers a range of tea including iced, therapeutic and flavoured teas.

After the passing away of Mr Anantharamakrishnan in 1964, his sons Mr A. Sivasailam and Mr A. Krishnamoorthy steered the group to greater heights

With the demise of Mr Sivasailam last year, his brother Mr Krishnamoorthy is now the Chairman of Amalgamations Group.

Former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is to be the chief guest of this memorable event. He will release a book ‘Friends of the Earth – The Stanes Story’ authored by Mr V. Sriram. British Deputy High Commissioner, South India, Mr Mike Nithavrianakis, will be the Guest of Honour and receive the first copy of the book, a company release said.
