The Tea Board has announced that the district average price for green leaf for March in The Nilgiris will be ₹15.60 a kg.

Tea Board Executive Director C Paulrasu said that this was fixed based on the average sale price of CTC teas from bought-leaf factories at the auctions in February. He said that all bought leaf factories in the Nilgiris have to pay this price in respect of their purchase of green leaf from small growers in March.

He also said that all field officers of the Board have been instructed to ensure that no factory in their jurisdiction paid a price lower than this in respect of purchases throughout March. This price was some 27 paise less than the price fixed for February but 60 paise more than the price in March 2018.

The bought leaf factories continue to voice their displeasure on such price fixation before the month ends.

“We have been requesting the Board to fix the price for the green leaf at the end of each month based on the price we get at the auctions during the concerned month as that alone will help us to recover the raw material cost,” Ramesh Bhojarajan, President, The Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association, told BusinessLine .
