Tea Board of India is planning to set up a tea park in Kochi for consolidation of all warehouses and other related activities on tea.
According to C. Paulrasu, Executive Director, the Board would extent all support and encouragement including financial assistance for the new venture.
He was here in Kochi for stakeholders meeting and also visited some warehouses in and around Willingdon Island, which are in the process of relocating to a new zone in the Island following the expiry of lease period in Kochi Port area.
Speaking at the meeting, he requested the small size tea buyers to buy tea through Kochi auctions. The Registration by Tea Board as Buyer under Tea (Marketing) Control Order 2003 would be given to the prospective applicants within very reasonable time.
When contacted J.K. Thomas, Chairman, Tea Trade Association of Cochin told Business Line that the assurance given by the Tea Board for financial assistance in setting up units in the park assumes significance at a time when the tea industry is passing through a very difficult phase. Depending upon the money availability, he said that respective units could set up blending and bagging facilities hitherto carried out in other regions. This would benefit tea exporters concentrating in Kochi Port in a big way by bringing more revenues to the port.
