After managing to post a record production in 2017, India has begun calendar 2018 on a disappointing note as adverse weather has pulled down the output in both North and South.
“As per the Tea Board’s production data for January, India’s output dropped to 17.15 million kg (mkg) from 19.16 mkg in January 2017. This fall of 2.01 mkg marked a decline of 10.49 per cent,” Rajesh Gupta, compiler of the annual ‘Global Tea Digest’, told BusinessLine .
This happened because North Indian production fell by 1.24 mkg to drop to 4.81 mkg and South Indian output declined marginally by 0.77 mkg to reach 12.34 mkg.
In the backdrop of North India reeling under harsh winter conditions and volumes of its teas unlikely to hit the market before April, as of now, Tamil Nadu (8.09 mkg) tops the country’s production table followed by Kerala (3.98 mkg).
