The country’s tea production in the first two months of current calendar year increased by 5.54 per cent over the same period a year ago, reveals the latest data available with Tea Board and the producers’ organisations.
North India marginally lost 0.16 million kg (mkg) with production slipping to 3.45 mkg. Assam output increased 0.28 mkg to 0.83 mkg. West Bengal lost 0.47 mkg at 2.53 mkg.
South Indian production went up by 1.99 mkg to 31.41 mkg. Tamil Nadu’s output increased by 1.49 mkg to 22.30 mkg. Kerala posted a 0.33 mkg increase at 8.24 mkg.
Collectively, production totalled 34.86 mkg against 33.03 mkg in 2012. The production would have been much higher had it not been for the poor production in February due to adverse weather conditions in most parts of the country.
North India’s output fell by 0.15 mkg to 0.79 mkg. South India’s production dropped by 0.92 mkg to 12.30 mkg.
February production dropped to 13.09 mkg, down 1.05 mkg.
