The auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association for the calendar year ended on a disappointing note as at the final sale (Sale No: 51).
Teas wroth ₹3.71 crore remained unsold as there were no takers for some 22 per cent of the offer.
With harsh winter conditions freezing the waterways and obstructing movement of teas in Europe and the US, export demand was subdued. The average prices crashed to six-week low of ₹97.64 a kg.
Homedale Estate’s Red Dust, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire CTC market when Ajmath Traders bought it for ₹235 a kg.
In the CTC leaf auction, Homedale Estate’s Broken Pekoe, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped at ₹213. No other CTC tea could enter the high-price bracket of ₹200/kg.
Among orthodox teas, Kairbetta topped at ₹239 followed by Chamraj ₹236 and Kodanad ₹220.
The auction will re-open on January 3.
