The rising trend in offerings at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association auctions continued this week with 20.03 lakh kg being offered for Sale No: 25 that will be held on Thursday and Friday.
It surpassed the volume offered last week by 3.46 lakh kg to become the highest volume offered so far this year. It is 3.83 lakh kg more than what was offered in the same period last year.
Of the 20.03 lakh kg on offer, 14.59 lakh kg belonged to the leaf grades and 5.44 lakh kg to the dust grades.
As much as 18.84 lakh kg belonged to CTC variety and only 1.19 lakh kg to the orthodox variety. The proportion of orthodox teas continued to be low in both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 0.67 lakh kg belonged to orthodox while 13.92 lakh kg, CTC. Among the dusts, only 0.52 lakh kg was orthodox while 4.92 lakh kg, CTC.
The substantial portion of this huge volume comprised fresh teas totalling 18.48 lakh kg. About 1.55 lakh kg comprised teas which had remained unsold in previous auctions. Nilgiri harvest was good due to the periodical showers in May.
Some bought-leaf factories are staggering the intake of green leaf as storage space will be available only after processing is over. The present wind is likely to lower the crop in the coming days. The high offer is also due to the arrival of teas for the auctions from other districts fuelled by the attractive prices prevailing in the last few weeks.
