Washington Apples, which had a poor year of exports to India last year, is hopeful of making a comeback this year. A brand known worldwide for its variety and origin, Washington Apples has a share of 60 per cent in US apple production. Of the 200 million cartons that the US produces every year, Washington Apples constitute 136 million, with each carton containing 20 kg of apples.

The 80-year-old Washington Apple Commission represents about 1,500 apple growers in the US State of Washington.

It promotes the brand in the US and across the world. However, it is not involved in any sales or facilitating trade pacts between the exporters and importers.

“The Washington Apple growers exported 5 million cartons in 2014-15. But this fell to 3 million cartons in 2015-16 because of increased demand in the US and also because of increased production in India. We are confident that the growers can reach the 5-million carton mark again this year,” said Keith Sunderlal, the India representative of Washington Apple Commission.

Washington is home to some of the world’s best apple varieties. The Red Delicious variety has a share of 30 per cent, while Honey Crisp is fast catching up as a preferred variety. Developed by the US Department of Agriculture system, this variety has a share of 3 per cent. Seven major varieties dominate the total produce.

Rebecca Lyons, International Marketing Director of Washington Apples, said the commission is targeting 25 countries to promote the brand. This includes the top importers of Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, China and India.

Apple orchards are grown in over 1.75 lakh acres in the eastern foothills of Cascade Mountains in the US, with the orchards ranging from 10 hectares to several hundreds hectares.
