A spectacular 55 per cent increase in wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh as compared to the previous rabi marketing season has helped government agencies to surpass the total procurement of 341.3 lakh tonnes (LT) that they made in the previous season, an official statement said on Monday.

The procurement agencies working with State agencies procured 341.56 LT of wheat till Sunday with Madhya Pradesh alone procuring 113.38 LT, which is nearly 55 per cent more than previous season’s total wheat procurement in the State, that is nearly 73 LT. The Centre has set a procurement target of 400 LT for the current rabi marketing season.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) procured nearly 126 LT in Punjab, even though wheat purchase in Haryana was much sluggish at 70.65 LT. Besides, the agencies have procured 20 LT in Uttar Pradesh and nearly 11 LT in Rajasthan.
