Beedi contractors in Karnataka will go on a strike from April 21 seeking an increase in their commission.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr K.A. Khader, President of the South Kanara and Udupi Districts’ Beedi Contractors’ Union, said beedi contractors are a major link between beedi workers and beedi manufacturing companies.

Though the beedi manufacturers offer Rs 60 for every 1,000 beedis sold to the shop owner, the beedi contractors are offered Rs 6.90 for every 1,000 beedis produced.

“Our demand is to increase this to either Rs 15 for every 1,000 beedis produced or 15 per cent of the wages of the beedi workers,” he said.

The contractors had approached the manufacturers twice seeking an increase in their commission. But their demands were not met.

As a result, beedi contractors had been forced to go on a strike from April 21. Contractors would not take tobacco and tendu leaves for rolling beedis from the manufacturers. This would have an impact on the production of beedis in the State, he said.

Mr Khader said nearly 6,000 beedi contractors from Karnataka and Kasaragod district of Kerala would participate in the protest.
