Cross-subsidisation of passenger traffic by goods hauled on the Railways for 2014-15 is estimated to decrease from the revised estimates of the 2013-14 fiscal.

This follows the recent hike in passenger fares announced in the last week of June.

Comparing the unit revenues from freight to that from passengers reveal that the fare-to-freight ratio stands at 25.7 per cent. The same was 24.3 per cent as per the revised estimate numbers for 2013-14.

In 2014-15, the average income from transporting one tonne of goods over a one km distance or revenue per net tonne km is estimated to be ₹1.53.

In comparison, the Railways’ average income from moving a passenger per km was 39.50 paise.
