It’s time to celebrate changemakers — people who, through their unique ideas, have made our society a better place. Some of the biggest names in corporate India, top policymakers and others who have made their mark in their chosen fields will congregate at the ITC Maurya in New Delhi today for an evening of felicitation and inspiration.

The guest of honour will be Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

BusinessLine, which entered its 25th year of publication earlier this year, chose to commemorate this important milestone with an award programme different from the many that celebrate corporate success alone. We wanted to turn the spotlight on people who are mostly unsung but still bringing about a significant transformation on the ground. Thus was born the BusinessLine Changemaker Awards.

A robust process was put in place to identify the nominees. Deloitte and Ashoka–Innovators for the Public were brought in as a knowledge partners to validate our process. Nominations were called for in mid-December. Over 600 nominations were received and processed. An independent jury, chaired by Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, and comprising S Ramadorai (Former Vice-Chairman, TCS), Naina Lal Kidwai (former country head HSBC India), Gopal Srinivasan (CMD, TVS Capital Funds), Rohini Nilekani (founder-chairperson, Arghyam), Debjani Ghosh (President-designate, Nasscom) and CV Madhukar (Investment partner, Omidyar Network) then chose the winners in New Delhi on February 23.

Panel discussion

The awards night will be kicked off by Suresh Prabhu, Union Minister of Commerce, Industry and Aviation, when he participates in a panel discussion on an important topic: ‘How welcoming is India to changemakers’. Sanjeev Bikchandani, founder and Vice-Chairman, Naukri.com, is the other panelist. The discussion will be moderated by Raghavan Srinivasan, Editor, BusinessLine .

This will be followed by a discussion between Finance Minister Jaitley and the BusinessLine editor.

The awards will then be presented. They recognise changemakers who have helped bring about a financial, digital and social transformation, and also felicitate a ‘Young Changemaker’, an ‘Iconic Changemaker’ and a ‘Changemaker of the Year’.

Music and an inspiring talk are also on the agenda to make the evening a memorable one.
