The Centre has reworked its sector wise target for achieving 175 GigaWatt of renewable energy generation capacity by 2022. Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Renewable Energy, RK Singh, said it has now been decided that the distinction between different forms of renewable energy (such as wind and solar) will not be taken into consideration while achieving the 175-GW renewable energy capacity generation goals till 2022.

“We are not rigid about the mix (of different forms of renewable energy), there will be flexibility within the overall target,” Singh said. Singh was speaking after a meeting with energy ministers from renewable energy-rich States.

Singh, however, did not elaborate on the reason for this revision.

The Centre had initially set a goal of having 100 GW of solar power generation and 60 GW of wind power generation capacity in the overall 175 GW renewable energy generation capacity target to be achieved by 2022. Singh added that the Centre is confident of achieving this target.

Commenting on the way ahead for the agriculture solar pump scheme (Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan - KUSUM), Singh said that similar schemes being run by the States will be subsumed into this.

The Finance Ministry was initially not in favour of allocating funds for this scheme. The scheme required a central financial assistance of ₹34,000 crore. “We have now got an approval from the Finance Ministry for this scheme,” Singh told BusinessLine.

“Of the ₹ 34,000 crore central assistance, ₹ 10,000 crore will be budgeted for by the Finance Ministry, another ₹ 24,000 crore will be borrowed by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency,” an official from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said.

The scheme is expected to be launched in the next 20 days, the official added.
