The Union Government should provide incentives and tax concessions to small-scale units manufacturing fly ash bricks, as they are rendering invaluable service to the nation and helping the cause of ecological conservation, according to N. Kalidas, Director of the Institute for Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance, here.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of the sixth one-day national workshop on clean development mechanism organised by the institute here on Saturday.
Carbon revenue cheques, amounting in all to Rs 3 crore, were given to entrepreneurs who had established fly ash brick units, employing FaL-G technology.
Kalidas, Executive Director of Eco Carbon Private Limited here, said the company had signed a pact with the World Bank to provide carbon credit to entrepreneurs as a part of promoting clean development mechanism.
“We have been striving to promote fly ash brick units without much help from the Government and so far 16,000 units have come up in different parts of the country. We have an ambitious target of one lakh units,” he said.
He said the carbon emissions reductions purchase agreement had been signed by Eco Carbon Private Limited in 2006 with the World Bank for 6 lakh tonnes of carbon-di-oxide emissions and it would be achieved through bundling of micro industrial units manufacturing FaL-G bricks and blocks.
He said the strength of the technology had been proved beyond doubt, but the support of the Government was also necessary to achieve the ambitious target.
“We have a national action plan for climate change, but it exists only in name and the Government is doing very little to promote clean technologies such as FaL-G. As our power demand grows, it becomes necessary to establish more thermal plants and we need to have more fly ash brick units. But there is no prospective planning and nothing much is being done,” he lamented.
Kirtan Sahoo, Deal Manager of the carbon finance unit of the World Bank, lauded the efforts of Kalidas and the institute in promoting the technology and said the World Bank would help entrepreneurs engaged in the field.
K. Haribabu, former MLA of Visakhapatnam and BJP leader, and Ch. Ramakotaiah, of the Builders' Association of India, also spoke of the need to encourage fly ash brick units.
