The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has sought strengthening of preventive measures to avert fire accidents in industrial units.

Walter D’Souza, Chairman (southern region), FIEO, said that the fire accident at the scented candle manufacturing unit of Primacy Industries at Baikampady in Mangalore on Thursday night is a setback to exports in general and during the last quarter of the current financial year in particular.

He said that the unit is not likely to be in action for another six months.

“The innovative plant had captured the admiration of global players in the scented and decorative candles category and emerged as world class in quality and range of the products it exported,” he said.

It is imperative that all preventive measures are in place to avoid all possible accidents of this nature.

Audit system

It is necessary to evolve a mechanism to assess the emergency needs by introducing an audit system to ensure that the preventive measures are good enough to stop such accidents in future, he said.

Fire fighting technology

It is necessary to introduce most modern equipment that can arrest the damage within the shortest time possible. This would call for upgradation of fire fighting technology to be on par with the best in the world.

D’Souza said that it is a great loss for the Indian exchequer in terms of the much needed forex that this company has generated over the years.

Over the years, many of the Tier-2 cities in India such as Mangalore have registered a significant industrial growth resulting in a healthy inflow of revenue in terms of the taxes they pay to the local bodies in the area.

However, it is deplorable that the infrastructure is certainly not commensurate with the requirements of the growth pattern.

He said that the roads leading to most of the industrial units are just not adequate to rush timely assistance in times of emergencies.
